When It Is All In The Name

To use the word designer and radiator in the same breath is not something you would have heard just a few years ago.

Radiators were fairly boring uniform items that all looked identical. Flat white panels fixed to the wall or if you were lucky some of those very old Edwardian cast iron contraptions are all you were likely to have seen.

Today everything from shoes, handbags, clothing and countless other consumables can be prefixed with the word designer.

There are people who would never be seen dead in anything other than designer clothing. A multi-billion dollar black market exists because of this. Fakes are made of designer watches and clothes to the annoyance f original manufacturers.

Designer radiators seems a bit of an anomaly until you take a look at some of the designs now currently available.

Almost certainly inspired by designers of luxury hotels and office blocks these radiators can look quite stunning and do indeed deserve to be called designer.

Instead of the radiator being a flat wall panel the designers have made almost a work of art out of some latest radiator designs.

Sleek and tall with chrome or matt black finish and even mirrored designs can become part of the whole room design and you would be forgiven for forgetting that they also provide the practical function of heating the room.

The many designs means that we can all now express our individual taste. Choice is one of the delights of consumerism in that competition between designers means we do not all have to have the same.

This is probably why the car industry still has some great individual small manufacturers despite the economic logic that the huge production lines make better sense. For a while it looked like every single manufacturer was going to be squeezed out or absorbed by just two or three global companies but individuals with the cash always want something different.

The same can now be said about radiators. It seems extraordinary that it is possible to pay more than one thousand pounds for a single radiator but when you look at the quality, individualism and style if we could afford it we would all do so.
